I had the chance to make Japanese dolls using traditional Japanese paper, for the second time in this summer of 2009. It was fun and of course a little bit of hard work. I managed to take photos step by step in the process. All the steps are not included, so that I hope to explain the procedure each step. The worst part is, all the stuff and shapes needed are already stuffed in to a little bag so that we never learn to cut out the papers by ourselves. Here we begin.
The head is made of cotton and an oil paper wrapped around to get a
smooth surface. The head is then glued to the end of a steel wire
which is at least 15cm long. Then another steel wire is attached horizontally and tied up with a thread to make up the arms. Next, paper serviettes are used to build and fatten up the body of the doll. Tape is used to tighten the tissue papers around the body of the doll so that the body becomes slim. Additionally, the tissue is also wounded up around the horizontal steel wire to fatten the arms.
10.1 The body of the doll
Next, as the body is completed, the dress making begins. All the kimono parts are already cut out so that I am not in the position to explain which part is what or how you cut it off from the Japanese papers. Sleeves, belts bows are already cut out so that, what is left is to glue and get them in to their shapes. Note that different to the real kimono, this kimonos are made top and bottom apart. additionally, the sleeves and the bow is also made apart.
10.2 The dress of the doll
Next, the dressing up begins. First the main kimono part are dressed up. Tape is used to tighten up the wrapping so that the shape of the body is curved out. Then move on to the obi which is the belt, which covers the tape which was earlier used to sharpen the body shape. The already built bow is now fixed to the belt and clipped till the binder glue thickens.
10.3 Dressing up the doll
Next step is to fix the sleeves of the doll. The ready made sleeves are glued to the arms using bond and then kept clipped to dry. Below are the snaps of front view and the back view of the doll at this point.
10.4 Sleeves and the bow is being attached
Finally it`s high time to start the hair do. first start with the fore hair and then moves on to the long black hair behind. Put little scissor cuts to make the hair more natural looking. Last of it is to attach the bow to the top of the head to cover the untidiness at the top of the head due to the two layers of black papers.
10.5 The hair-do of the doll
Last of all is to give the doll a more natural look. For that, the hands are bent with some final touches to the sleeves. It is your choice to change the positions o the hands which gives your doll a better and a grander look.
