Stone Murals at Borobudur - Yogyakarta

Borobudur Temple which is the largest temple in the world boasts of some beautiful stone carvings with Indian Gupta influence. Following wikipedia article is very educational when it comes to Borobudur Historic Value. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borobudur There are 504 Buddha statues all together in this site. Some Buddha statues are situated inside the stupas as the one below. Some are placed inside stone wall s without head cover. We are not sure whether those statues used to have a roof or something overhead. Then when we walk along the corridors we come across some Buddha statues leaned to the outside walls gazing serenely towards the world below. There are also beautiful stone carvings where several stones are fixed to create one mural. Very detailed carvings, I should say. As you may see the stones are a little yellowish as the Dutch archaeologists who found this at first tried to use sulfur to save the murals. Other than the Buddha statue...

House of a Samurai in Kanazawa

18/07/2010 It was the second day in Kanazawa and was in nagamchi the Samurai town. There are rebuilt samurai houses indicating the old living patterns. Some houses still have old ornaments cutlery, toilets left.I am always surprised of the Japanese  people  who lived in very little spaces. The inside plan of a foot soldier house. The view of the inside from the entrance Cutlery used in the  house The living room An old fireplace In early japan people used to sit around the fireplace wholeday making tea, cooking, eating, chatting and even sleeping. This habit is still left in Japan, now around kotatsu instead of the fireplace. kotatsu is a small table with a heater attached and till recently it had a coal heater attached. The extra sleeping room upstairs and the ladder used to get in. The ancient closets more like `pettagam in` sinhala The backside of the house The bathtub O...

Ayutthaya Historical Park - Ayutthaya - Thailand

17/02/2010  Ayutthaya Historical Park is an ruined old city of the Ayutthaya  just like our Mahamewna Park in Anuradhapura. The two cities have same glories , thousands of ruined Buddhist temples, awasa and palaces. But comparing Autthaya to Anuradhapura or Anuradhapura to Ayutthaya has no sense because each has its own value and story. The first visit was to Wat Yai Chai Mongkul. It has a long statue of a Sleeping Buddha covered in a yellow Cheevara.  It is said that this was one of the Buddha statues let unharmed when the Burmese invaded and burned down the Ayutthaya city. The hair and the way of the Cheewara was dressed, indicates its own Thai Characteristics. We moved on to the Buddha house to experience the first Thai way of worshiping the Lord Buddha. as photos are unavailable due to privacy reasons, I`ll explain how it happens. You first buy three buds of lotus. With it comes t...
