Floating Market Damnoen Saduak - Bangkok -Thailand

19/02/2010

3rd day in Thailand was to be a day that can be never forgotten. We were in for a motor boat ride in the famous canals with shops floating on either side.  I have never seen such a market before and was planning to take the best out of it.The market opens at 7.30 in the morning and surprisingly, closes at exactly one o`clock in the afternoon. They run it longer on Saturdays it seems and we had to hurry up because we were in for a weekday ride.

It is a paradise of souvenirs and land of tourists. The whole world comes under one roof gathered on either side of the canal watching the market float by. You can enjoy the shopping from the banks to cool your mind or so many things to see to soothe your eyes or else get something for your stomachs. It has everything under the roof but with varying prices depending on the country they are from.

We took a motor boat for 500 Bhats for one round trip of one hour in the canals. You can choose between motor boats and normal rowing boats. Rowing boats give you the time to absorb everything yet motor boats are faster and a lot more places are covered within a single round. It was a wonderful feeling once you get inside the boat. You sit in the level of the water and buy from either side of the boats from sellers who are sitting in the same level. They provide you with photo plates at the end of the ride which is normally 150 Bhats for a foreigner and just 100 Bhat for us.

We went to a temple long way down the canal by the boat It was beautiful sight to the eye. It was not at all crowded. It gives out the feeling of standing high alone in the middle of nowhere. Only the motor boats come to this temple premises as it is far down the canals.

The next stop was at  the Coconut Sugar Farm, which is again away from the main market area. It sells stuff made from different parts of coconut. Here we had the chance to drink the sweetest ever coconut juice drink (wewara) sweeter than what we find in Sri Lanka. This shops have nice paintings and other hand crafts, good ones with good prices.

It was of course a beautiful experience. One hour long ride in the boat was fun and interesting. Before I end this post I have to say something. It is more like a warning. You can be deceived with higher prices. I was and  thanks to my Thai friend my purse was saved.

Well, luck was upon me this one time. It was early morning of 5.45 and I was waiting for my sensei s vehicle in front of  Toyama Station. We were simply above the clouds and the temperature difference was too much to bear. It was cold in the summer. Early in the morning when we passed the Murodo staion on our way to Kurobe dam it was clear all around. in the aftern...

Borobudur - Yogyakarta

2014/05/06 Borobudur is the worlds largest Buddhist temple, hence UNESCO World Heritage Site. We had plans to watch the sunrise at Borbudur over Mount Merapi. So it was an early trip to the temple around 4.30 in the dark by torch light, wait for the sunrise enjoy the view from the top of the temple, have breakfast at Manohara hotel and leave. It was pitch dark in the night, not much moon. The torchlight showed us the way and a silhouette of a temple came in to view when our eyes gradually got used to the dark. With the first rays of sunlight, we saw Mount Merapi. The beautiful but vicious volcano fuming. Loved it! All around the place is covered in mist, so the actual surroundigs are yet to be confirmed. By now the temple, which we  have already climbed and waiting at the  top, is coming in to view. The stupas, carvings and statues gradually emerge. The temple is a symmetrical stupa, consisting of nine stacked platforms: six squar...
