Christmas Illuminations - Roppongi - 2009

22/12/2009

This year a sudden change in plans, resulted in a cold night out to Tokyo to enjoy the Christmas Illuminations of the year 2009. Four of us ( Two boys and two girls -  all Thai) set out early at 4.30  in the evening toShinjuku.

Toeido line took us to Roppongi - beautiful luxurious night land of Tokyo. "MIDTOWN CHRISTMAS" was the  Special Christmas illumination event going on in Roppongi in this winter. Galleria is a luxurious shopping mall just in front of the  Roppongi station. All the illumination and events are in an around this big shopping plaza.

Welcome Chandelier
Welcome Chandelier(図1) is made of  Japanese traditional paper called "washi" and is at  the entrance of the Gallaria shopping mall. This is lightened up twice and hour an one lightening up  is carried on for 15 minutes. This is so large that it hangs down from the top floor towards three floors below. This is lightened up in various colors as shown above for 15 long minutes.

図2 Santa Tree
The above Christmas tree is different from any other Christmas tree inside the building. This is made of more than of more than 27 kinds of  nearly 1500 little Santa Clauses. This was the special attraction of the year 2009 X`mas decorations at Roppongi.

Prism Avenue
Prism avenue(図3) was all about large overhead hammock like illuminations. They were hung just outside the Gallaria in the midtown-west area.  The rope like illuminations just below the neon hammocks are said to be using the world`s first roller coaster type LED bulb lightning method called ASAMI.

図4 Tree Illuminations
Above is just beside the Prism Avenue with neon LED clad trees lined up all around the Gallaria Plaza. It is said that nearly 470000 LEDs were used to light up the  Tree Illumination event.

図5 l'Avenue des Champs-Élysées
This is the Tokyo effort to relive the l'Avenue des Champs-Élysées of France, in Tokyo. some of these lights travel along the wire to give the effect of falling snow which I would call a real success.

 å›³6 Starlight Garden
Nearly 2000 square meters of flat grass land is fully covered with blue and white little LEDs to create the starry night s sky on earth. The view of a standing white tree with the Tokyo Tower towering in the dark blue sky behind makes it one of the greatest spots for Christmas illuminations ever.

Tanabata - Story behind the tale

Story1 Orihime is a princess who wove beautiful clothes by the bank of the Amanogawa which is  Milky Way in English . She worked very hard every day to weave clothes. However, Orihime was sad that because of her hard work she could never meet or fall in love with anyone. Concerned about his daughter,  the  father arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi who lived and worked on the other side of the Amanogawa. When the two met, they fell instantly in love with each other and married shortly thereafter. However, once married, Orihime no longer would weave cloth and Hikoboshi allowed his cows to stray all over Heaven. In anger,  the  father separated the two lovers across the Amanogawa and forbade them to meet. Orihime became despondent at the loss of her husband and asked her father to let them meet again. The father was moved by his daughter’s tears and allowed the two to meet on the 7th day of the 7th month if she worked hard and finished her weaving. The first time they tried to meet,

Tateyama Alpine Route - Murado Station

19/07/2010 Another dream coming true. I always wanted to go there.I was collecting leaflets, pamphlets about this but never thought of   going due to the high costs. Well, luck was upon me this one time. It was early morning of 5.45 and I was waiting for my sensei s vehicle in front of  Toyama Station. I did know the plans for the day but that we were going to Tateyama. Were we going to Kurobe Dam too, or going to Kurobe Dam?Were we going to take the Alpen Route or go straight to Kurobe? Surprises were waiting. We reached Tateyama Station and I knew it is my dream coming true. Weather and information of the day  It was around 14degrees at the top of the mountain while it was nearly 36degrees at the foot. We were simply above the clouds and the temperature difference was too much to bear. It was cold in the summer. Early in the morning when we passed the Murodo staion on our way to Kurobe dam it was clear all around. in the afternoon, sudden fogs, drizzles and strong winds
